Many streets have been renamed. The majority of Brisbane streets were renamed around 1938 when Council together with the Post and telegraph Office decided:
“no (street) names in Brisbane should be duplicated, the Council to deal with all cases of duplication by giving other suitable names- these names to be as simple and euphonious as possible, and to be drawn from flora and fauna, pioneers, prominent public men (past and present), and aboriginal names –and the remaining of streets, where duplication has occurred to be carried out in a manner that will ensure as little inconvenience as possible to residents.”
By 1939 it appears that Council had largely abandoned its plans to rename all duplicated streets, the project being too big. In this year Council produced a supplementary index listing renamed streets. The City Archives have a copy available for viewing in its reference room.
