Notes on the History of Street Naming in Brisbane

Street name suggestions for new streets formed as a result of land subdivisions have always been the responsibility of the subdivider. The Subdivider lodges an application for approval to Brisbane City Council together with new street names. Council then accepts or rejects the names.

  • Until 1972,no formal records were kept by Council of street name decisions and existing sources about street name decisions prior to this are based on local knowledge/ research.
  • Council has a street name index, which lists dates streets created, and origins of the name. While this index includes streets named prior to 1972 this information will not necessarily be based on Council records.
